It’s my second attempt at The Challenge.  A couple years ago, I made it to like 13 songs before promptly passing out.  This time, I set out to make 20 little parts that were supposed to play together as one long seamless piece. Of course, I ran out of time and had to make all sorts of irrational mixing/lyrical decisions to finish the darn thing.  But whatever.  Chinese Democracy, it’s not (and I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing).

Anyway, I decided to release the resulting piece for free here as my 11th Lackthereøf album, in hopes that it will inspire you to take the Twenty Song Challenge yourselves.  It’s a great exercise to cleanse the ol’ palette and to feel like you’ve accomplished something in a day, even if you’re just recording twenty different farts with your fancy iPhone recording app.  There are no rules in Challenge Club.  Just make sure the flatulence is tonally diverse!

Speaking of hot air, Menomena is in the final two weeks of recording our fifth record. More news on that front coming soon, I hope.  In the meantime, check out the music below, complete with front and back covers.  Have fun!

Menomena will be reissuing its debut album I Am The Fun Blame Monster! as a CD/DVD package with extensive bonus materials. The record will be released nationally on May 24th on the boutique FILMguerrero label.

Originally self-released by the band in 2003, this reissue includes the original record, nine bonus tracks, and a retrospective DVD. The bonus material features rare footage of the band’s appearances on Portland cable access program The Sista Social Show, an endearingly awkward live performance at the now-defunct Meow-Meow (site of the first Menomena show, ever) and music videos for the album tracks “Trigga Hiccups” and “Cough Coughing”.

Since the release of I Am The Fun Blame Monster!, Menomena has gone on to make three more haunting and articulate recordings. 2005’s Under An Hour (also on FILMguerrero) consists of three lengthy instrumental compositions and is the soundtrack to a modern dance performance. In 2007 Menomena released their third record, Friend and Foe (Barsuk) to an overwhelmingly positive reception.

Mines (Barsuk), the band’s fourth full-length record, has been lauded by critics at music culture observatories from Pitchfork to Paste Magazine (“on Mines full-blown insanity finally breaks free of the straightjacket”), NPR to Alternative Press (“meticulously crafted [four stars]”), The BBC to Filter (“magical”). In 2010 the band made their network television debut as musical guests on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, followed by two appearances on Last Call with Carson Daly.
